A Photolog: Limited Edition Edy’s Touchdown Sundae & NFL Wildcard Weekend Picks!

Junk Food Nation, good morning!  As you can see from the title banner, today’s junk food is: Edy’s Limited Edition Touchdown Sundae. And why am I reviewing this? Because the NFL Playoffs are here!  Woot woot.  Football-themed junk food!  There’s no way this could go wrong, right?  Right?

Maybe it would’ve been better to review a junk food with the word “sundae” in it ON an ACTUAL Sunday. But why wait? The playoffs begin today, and I have all your picks right here.  In chronological order:

CINCY @ HOUSTON: Tough call here.  I am tempted to pick Houston as the loser here, because they have TJ Yates and Jake Delhomme at the helm, and Jake Delhomme started fumbling the ball on the sidelines before he even got into the game in Week 17.  Cincy arguably has the more polished QB with rookie QB Andy Dalton, a TCU product who seems to handle pressure decently.  Weapons? Houston has the one-two punch of Arian Foster and Ben Tate.  Andre Johnson I’m scaling back because see: TJ Yates/Jake Delhomme.  Cincy has AJ Green and …who else is on that team? Cedric Benson? Er…. Houston has a 3 game losing streak going into the playoffs and Cincy has only two wins in the last five wins against lowly ARZ and STL.  Ugh.  What a toss-up.  I’m gonna say HOUSTON wins, only because they are at home.  Blech.

Anyways, back to the junk food.  Limited Edition Edy’s Touchdown Sundae is the first Edy’s product and their Touchdown Sundae variety is prominently displayed on their website. (Sidenote: Edy’s has girl scout cookie ice cream now??? Holy shit, GIMME.)

Limited Edition Edy’s Touchdown Sundae ice cream doesn’t seem to be anything unusual – vanilla ice cream, fudge ribbon, caramel-filled chocolate – so I decided to just roll out a photo log for this review.  Join me at the end for the taste comments:

The Money Shot

I actually love the font and logo - very well crafted

Caramel Filled Chocolate Footballs, complete with stitching

Frozen Dairy Dessert?  Err….you mean, ICE CREAM!?

Well....not really the most creative

U scream I scream We all scream for Ice Cream!

Ingredient #1 = whey

In the United States, annatto extract is listed as a color additive “exempt from certification” and is informally considered to be a natural color.  Yikes.

Fudgey ribbon

Hidden footballs

Wait, these look like HALF-footballs

Where's my caramel???

First thing I noticed about Edy’s Limited Edition Touchdown Sundae ice cream – the footballs looked NOTHING like on the package!  First, they were half-footballs.  Second, when opened with a bite, I didn’t see any flowing caramel!  Boooooo.  False …er…cartoon football representations!

But the taste.  The taste was…pretty ok.  It was just good, standard, vanilla ice cream.  A little airy, but otherwise standard vanilla flavor and the fudge ribbons did really well cutting throw the cream to deliver a deep chocolate taste.  The chocolate footballs themselves, when crunched, did provide both a nice milk chocolate flavor AND (despite being seemingly invisible) did taste strongly of caramel.

Overall? Not bad.  It was alright. Just a decent ice cream combination that you might’ve had using a different name.  Worthy of some football watching showdown, for sure.

Back to my picks!

DETROIT @ NEW ORLEANS: I love the Lions’ story. Stafford passes for over 5000 yards, Calvin Johnson was Megatron-like, dominating the competition over the course of the year, and the young defense with NDamukong Suh and Nick Fairley.  What I don’t love about Detroit – their running game.  Jahvid Best – non factor. Kevin Smith – injured. Maurice Morris – old as nails.  I can appreciate that Detroit has upped their game tempo to reflect a Saints’ type offense.  But you know who has it down pat already? The Saints.  Brees should win the MVP this year, and the Saints have in my opinion the most balanced offense in the entire playoffs. Everyone is healthy, and I expect the SAINTS to win. Sorry to my friend Andrew, a Lions’ fan, who I will be watching this game with this evening.

ATLANTA @ NEW YORK GIANTS: Even since the Bills’ “Wide Right” I have hated the Giants. Hated the Giants. Hated the Giants.  The only saving grace for the Giants was them beating the Patriots, who I hated more. But still – booooo Giants.  Unfortunately, I think the Giants will win, and here’s why: Matt Ryan can’t win outdoors. It was the story of 2010, and it’s the story of 2011 all over again – Matty Ice loves to pass in dome environments. And when he’s outdoors, he’s not great.  I think that alone is the determining factor, and the GIANTS take it. Not that I don’t think New York will make plenty of mistakes to keep the game close…but the Falcons won’t capitalize.

STEELERS @ BRONCOS: Ugh, in actuality, I think ALL these games are tough to call.  All signs here point to the Steelers just rolling over the inept Denver Broncos and their touchdown Jesus Tim Tebow, but let’s look at the facts: 1. Ben Roethlisberger is hurt. 2. Isaac Redman starting in place of Mendenhall. 3. Ryan Clark not playing.  A lot of people have said that the Steelers’ defense will crush Tebow and contain the pocket.  Maybe. But if the Steeler’s offense doesn’t get it done, we could have a snoozer on our hands.  Denver’s defense is pretty stout too, and I could see them getting to Big Ben often. Will it matter? Ultimately, I think no – Ben Roth. is known for his playoff injury-filled heroics, and I see PITTSBURGH winning, but don’t be surprised if a mile-high miracle occurs.

Enjoy the games this weekend everyone!  Go Bills!

  1. The package should just say, “Buy me for your Super Bowl parties!!! I’m themed!!!”

  2. Lindemann says:

    +1 on Teresapalooza!!’s comment.

I think the Saints are going to win too, but I give the Lions a puncher’s chance. They don’t have to blitz to get pressure on the QB, and they can light up the scoreboard.

My picks in the other games are: Cincy (Houston is walking wounded), Atlanta (Giants have one more inexplicable collapse left in them), and Broncos (because Tebow has the joy, joy, joy, joy down in his heart).

  3. Don’t forget the other part of Cincinnati’s uphill battle this week. Dalton spent most of the week sitting next to the toilet and sink according to Marvin Lewis. LOL.

  4. Oh yeah, one more thing…Edy’s may have Girl Scout ice cream flavors available, but they are missing the best one, Tagalongs. Thin Mints are good and Samoas can be decent in moderation, but by missing the best Girl Scout Cookie flavor (BY FAR), they are really screwing themselves over.

Just look at how legendarily the Girl Scout Tagalong Blizzard at Dairy Queen worked out. I reviewed it on one of my other blogs and it was INCREDIBLE. Here’s the review: http://wouldibuyitagain.com/2009/11/dairy-queen-girl-scouts-tagalong-blizzard/

  5. I’m chatty today (must be the beers I’m drinking as I read this prior to the playoff games starting)…frozen dairy dessert is actually correct. The FDA requires that in order to be classified as ice cream, a frozen dessert product must have a certain milk/cream percentage as part of the whole. If it does not, it cannot label itself as ice cream. That’s the case with a lot of these Edy’s products and is also how they cut calories…they take the fat (the best part) out of the ice cream. That’s also why Ben & Jerry’s is always so calorie dense…they keep a ton of the fat in.

You may already have known that, but there’s a chance someone might not have. Anyway, back to the regularly scheduled programming…

@Andrew – you picked everyone opposite me! hmmmmmmm maybe you know something I don’t

@CrazyFoodDude – The frozen dessert thing is very interesting; thanks for clarifying. I didn’t know that – are ALL of Edy’s products frozen desserts, then? Do they have any “ice creams” which are actually labeled “ice creams?” ….and yes, the Tagalong Blizzard looks delish

  6. Don’t hold me to this, but I do believe that Edy’s does have some “ice cream” products, but I’m not sure.

  7. Dubba says:

The remaining Grand Flavors are still real ice cream but their numbers are dwindling. Most of their stuff tends to be light ice cream or frozen dairy dessert

Oh, and I still think this flavor is boring 🙂

    • junkfoodguy says:

@Dubba: Oh, the Grands Flavors…good to know. But yeah, man – boring, right? Like, if you’re gonna have a new flavor…HAVE A NEW FLAVOR.
